KILLED BY DEATH - Paintings by Jack Rodgers

My practice combines improvised drawing with stream-of-consciousness text to examine the way meaning is filtered through the creative process. My process is prolific and fast-paced, engaging primarily in the playful act of creating and problem solving rather than developing an overarching or predetermined meaning. Establishing process based rules for each body of work sets up a kind of game within which all possible outcomes can be pursued. It is only in the post-mortem of these outcomes that symbolism and meaning begin to emerge from the chaos. For this latest body of work, I have adopted the formal structure of haikus to explore feelings associated with death. The brevity of a haiku allows me to break down this overwhelming subject into specific emotions and explore the personal as well as the universal. While my past drawings have often included humorous or confounding text, each haiku is explored as a standalone narrative through subsequent drawings. The results are simple but wide-ranging illustrations of humorous, horrifying, matter-of-fact, strange and unexpected perspectives on death
